Invasive plants are frequently used in a traditional landscape, and unfortunately not only do they have no ecological value, they also cause financial and ecological harm. If you have invasive plants in your garden, please remove them. Not every plant needs to be native to your area, but if you have unchecked spreaders, they can cause untold damage.

What Are Invasive Plants?

Invasive plants are non-native species that spread rapidly and can cause harm to the environment, economy, or human health. They often outcompete native plants for resources like sunlight, water, and nutrients. This can lead to a decline in biodiversity, which is crucial for a healthy ecosystem.

Some common invasive yard plants include:

  • English ivy: Known for its rapid growth and frequently used as a ground cover, English ivy can cover trees, break limbs, and kill nearby plants.

  • Japanese barberry: Originating in Asia, this plant is known for its beautiful red fall foliage and bright red berries. The unnutritious berries are eaten by birds, seeds dropped in the woodlands, and germinate to grow entire groves of barberry, which are unfortunately not kept in check by any other wildlife in North America.

  • Burning bush: Originating in Asia, this shrub is also known for its beautiful fall foliage. This fast-growing plant can also spread throughout woodland areas and create entire groves, which are ecologically useless and supress the growth of other native plants and shrubs.

You're outta here!

Not every non-native plant is invasive... in fact many are not. Aggressive native plants are by definition not invasive (even though you might find them to be unruly in your garden). Just do everyone a favor and remove the invasive plants from your property.
